Dinner or a Night Out

Tags: Sightseeing, Food and Drink

A colleague gave me a list of restaurants and bars worth a visit while in New Orleans.

  • Central grocery (review): stand-up place, good muffalattas, cool grocery/deli
  • Domilise’s (review): supposed to have good po-boys
  • Napoleon’s (menu): dark, funky place for a drink/snack
  • Pat O’Briens (review): Great place for a drink

Restaurants I’ve heard are great, but never been: Commander’s Palace, Galatoires, Herbsaint, Bayona, Brennans, Brigtsens.

Just about all of these joints look close to the French Quarter or Garden District, so relatively close to conference hotels or, at most, a short cab ride away.

Bring your appetites.

Anybody have a review to add? How about pictures of food to get our mouths' watering?

If you like R&B and jazz, check out the Snug Harbor club (beyond the Quarter, but worth the walk or cab ride). I've never had dinner there, but the music and the atmosphere are great! http://www.snugjazz.com/site/ Put the Cafe du Monde on your list for a snack/breakfast of beignets and cafe au lait. The coffee is made with chickory for a different taste. Just don't wear a black shirt (as I did once). You'll have powdered sugar all over it! http://www.cafedumonde.com/ My other "don't miss it" is the French Market http://www.frenchmarket.org/ Get your souvenirs here at America's oldest city market, with lots of artists and other vendors.

Snug Harbor is a great place for real jazz. It is located on Frenchman. Call for tickets. The venue is more tha you could imagine. Frenchman is known for its real NO jazz.

I had a nice seafood dinner at Deanie's on Iberville Street. Also, the 555 Restaurant in the New Orleans Mariott serves great food--try the Butternut Squash Soup with Pecans.
